Preparing for your shoot
I usually shoot portaits in natural light
using real locations as backdrops.
It’s more relaxing for my clients and
produces much more interesting and
昀氀attering photographs than a staged,
studio session ever could.
Because our sessions are very relaxed,
we can take our time to get to know each
other. This is especially important for
children. I prefer to have a cuppa and get
to know everyone before we start taking
photographs.
Sessions usually last around an hour and
a half to two hours. The 昀椀rst part of your
session will usually take place at home
as people are more relaxed in familiar
surroundings.
After spending some time taking family
groups and individual photographs at
home we’ll do the second part of the
session in a favourite place close to
home or further a昀椀eld. This could be in
a village, the countryside, in the city or
even at the beach.
What to wear? I recommend you choose
two or three out昀椀ts for each person so
you have a few options. We can then
have a look at what will work best for
your session.
Most people prefer to wear casual
clothes but if people want a more formal
style of dress that can work really well
too in the right setting.
